Soma Pill is an oral pain relief medication used to treat the acute and musculoskeletal pain or injuries in people. This medication is supposed to be taken with proper rest and physical therapy to get proper relief from acute pain. The generic name of this drug is Carisoprodol. It includes Carisoprodol and Aspirin as its active ingredients. Carisoprodol has been in use since 1959. Soma pill, however, has been approved only in the year 2007 in the United States and is sold as a prescription medication to the people. This drug has been declared as a Schedule IV controlled substance by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) because of its increasing abuse.

How Soma works!

The exact mechanism is still not known but as a centrally acting muscle relaxer, it works like a blanket sedative and affects a person’s entire central nervous system. It helps in relaxing the muscles and provides alters the pain transmission that takes place between the nerves in the spinal cord and in the brain. It not only provides muscle relaxation but mind relaxation as well. It changes the way a person reacts or behaves towards their pain.

Precautions to use it

• ·         This medication must be stored at room temperature away from extreme moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. It should be kept away from children and pets. Never keep it in your washroom.
• ·         You should never share this drug with other people particularly with people who have a prior substance use disorder. Carisoprodol is an addictive product. It can be easily misused if it is used by people who have a prior addiction to drugs or alcohol. Remember sharing or selling this drug to other people is illegal.
• ·         While using this medication, avoid any activities that require mental alertness. This drug can make you feel dizzy. It will be safe for you to avoid performing such tasks until they can be performed safely.
• ·         Children or teenagers less than 17 years must never receive this medication.
• ·         Carisoprodol is harmful if a breastfeeding mother takes it as it can pass into the milk and harm a nursing child. Lactating mothers must ask their doctors for a safer alternative.
• ·         Pregnant women too must ask their doctor before deciding to take this drug. There could be potential risk of this drug harming an unborn baby.

Note: You can take this medication with or without food. Never break, chew, or split this pill in half. Take it with a glass of water. Never consume this drug with alcohol or with street drugs. Tell your doctor about your complete medical history and about the drugs you are taking at present. If you have a habit of regularly consuming alcohol or if you were a drug addict before, you must tell your doctor about it. This drug is usually prescribed for 2-3 weeks and is taken normally 3 times a day and once before bedtime. Make sure you follow your doctor’s guidelines completely.
